With only a week of rehearsals to go until opening night of L’Italiana in Algeri, our studios are bustling with singers, brilliantly colored costumes, and props galore!
Set in Algiers in a seaside palace, this comedic opera spends a few days in the lives of the bored and gullible bey, his court, and his Italian captives just as an Italian ship wrecks a short way from the palace shore. Excited to gain a new, Italian wife and rid himself of his current one, the bey orders the beautiful Isabella and her crew be brought to the palace.
Isabella, shipwrecked while in search of her fiance Lindoro, has other plans and wastes no time in planning their escape. Will she be reunited with her lover or will the bey have his way and win over the heart of the Italian Girl in Algiers?
Gioachino Rossini wrote L’Italiana in Algeri at the age of 21 in less than a month. He claims to have written it in 12 days, but other accounts say 27. His style has been quoted as “manic” throughout the opera, combining energetic sounds with tender arias throughout.
