Scholarship Opportunities for Classical Vocalists
The St. Louis Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL) is pleased to announce two unique scholarship opportunities for young and emerging classical vocalists. We encourage educators and teachers to share this information widely with students who may qualify.
The Shirly Rabb Winston Scholarship in Classical Voice
The Shirly Rabb Winston Scholarship is an annual award designed to advance the private study and future success of singers ages 16–22. This honor is awarded to a student who demonstrates exceptional talent and strong potential, and it provides $17,000 in scholarship funds annually, which can be used for training, college tuition, or private lessons.
Application Requirements: Applications must consist of three memorized solo vocal selections of contrasting style and mood from opera, art song, or oratorio. Three languages must be represented, one of which must be English. Submissions, including videos and a brief biography, are due on February 1st, 2026, as per the 2026 NSAL Winston scholarship guidelines. Winners will be announced in April 2026.
The 2026 Martorella Scholarship in Classical Voice
The 2026 Martorella Scholarship is designed to advance the private study and future success of emerging professional vocalists ages 23–31. This honor is awarded to a musician with exceptional talent and strong future potential, and it provides $10,000 in scholarship funds annually, which can be used for training, college tuition, or private lessons.
Application Requirements
Applications must consist of three prepared vocal selections of contrasting style, key, and mood. Selections must represent three languages, with English being required. Oratorio selections may be sung from the score, but all others must be sung from memory. Applications are due on February 15, 2026, with results announced in April 2026.

Winter Opera St. Louis is providing valuable resources for all applicants. A private recording space featuring a grand piano is available for rehearsal use if needed.
