Assistant Conductor Internship

Winter Opera Saint Louis’ 2018-2019 Season

About us

Winter Opera St. Louis (WOSTL) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide St. Louis with world-class operatic performances during the winter months. Our work features nationally and internationally known artists, performing classic operas in their original language, with English subtitles. We also highlight local performers and strengthen the local artist community year-round through community outreach programs and workshops. We are committed to enhancing public appreciation and support of opera in St. Louis and to preserving the beauty of this art form for generations to come.

Winter Opera St. Louis, celebrating its 12th season, is excited to launch a new and exciting artistic internship. The Assistant Conductor Professional Internship is an unpaid internship that will deliver a strong and unique professional conducting training in opera for the St. Louis area.

Candidates should have some significant conducting experience, though not necessarily in the opera field. Participants are selected on the basis of prior training, demonstrated interest, and will have completed at least two years of relevant academic musical training. Participants must read music proficiently.

Those chosen will have opportunities to conduct during staging rehearsals, and if qualified, will serve as cover conductor in case of illness of the conductor. Affinity for vocal music and working with singers is an asset. Other duties such as backstage conducting, providing music and balance notes, or arranging orchestral parts, may also be assigned as appropriate.

The internship welcomes participants from all over the world to apply. For some special cases the company could provide accommodation while in St. Louis. Traveling expenses will always be covered by the participant.

Program Dates: 2018 – 2019 season

Each of our opera productions offers a remarkable opportunity for one (1) Assistant Conductor Professional Internship. Candidates may apply for one, two or all of the productions, depending on availability. The Internship will focus on selected rehearsals of the following opera productions:

Oct 25th – Nov 11th 2018, Die Fledermaus – Johann Strauss II (sung in English)
Conductor: Scott Schoonover / Venue: Skip Viragh Center for the Performing Arts at Chaminade

Jan 10th – 27th 2019, l’Italiana in Algeri – Gioachino Rossini (sung in Italian)
Conductor: Darwin Aquino / Venue: Pillsbury Chapel at Missouri Baptist University

Feb 21st – March 10th 2019, Norma – Vincenzo Bellini (sung in Italian)
Conductor: Darwin Aquino / Venue: Skip Viragh Center for the Performing Arts at Chaminade

Conducting Interns will work directly with our Music Director, Chorus Master, and Collaborative Pianist, receiving valuable instructions in opera, conducting technique, styles, languages and musical leadership. They will learn by observing and conducting, as well as taking part in specifically designed workshops with the music director to assess their individual questions and needs. There will be ample opportunity to develop technique and gain experience through the rehearsals. Knowledge of Italian language is an asset.

Winter Opera St. Louis will provide a diploma to each of the selected participants signed by the Artistic and Music Directors after completion of internship.
